There is really no need for the hateful speech and cursing currently being thrown at whetstone. I can understand reasoned and calm disagreement, but the repeating of "I hate you!" 50 times, and telling him what he can go do with himself only makes us look like children. What is this? Kindergarten? If you disagree with Whetstone, fine. But don't drown him with hate and violence for he's done nothing worthy of that. It's not like he's worshipping Hitler and calling for the end of the Jews or the blacks. That would be one thing. I admit that I am a Christian, and I may have not used the infidel title, mainly because the enemies of civilization, Islamic Fundamentalist Terrorists, use it often. Again, if you disagree with Whetstone fine. Why hate speech?

I don't want to go against your religion. I respect you. But please, answer just one question for me. If god is so forgiving, and he feels compassion for all people, how could he be so cruel as to damn a persons soul to a flaming pit of despair for an eternity just because they were lost in the path of life? Thats a terrible punishment, and I find it hard to accept a god into my life if he could be so unforgiving. Please, you seem like a good person, send me a private message with your response.

You try to present something meaningful, but use garish and melodramatic music and typography. Is your site about sin and redemption, or about being cool and creepy? I'm a Christian and no part of my life is about the fear you celebrated in this ytmnd.

Would be 1 for religious bigotry, but it was well-done. So at least you tried to get a message across. Additionally, I'd imagine the "good Christians" would die in just the same agony. And hey, y'know, if I go to hell, I don't give a damn. Life's eternal torture as it is, hell can't be much worse. That is, if it's still under Jerusalem, the most self-centered city on Earth.

Note: we talk a lot about Steve Irwin's death. Did you know that Christians made up yet ANOTHER "phony conversion" story to capitalize off his death? http://www.snopes.com/politics/religion/irwin.asp The death of people is sad and moving to most people. But to some fanatics, it's a GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY TO SELL THEIR IDEAS!!! Weeeeeeeee! That's pretty much the definition of "scum.' Note that the group that spread the rumor is led by Carl Wieland... who happens to be one of the members of Answers in Genesis, an evangelical anit-science website.

I don't believe in an afterlife. I believe that, when you die, everything that makes you you ceases to be. If God does exist, and I'm going to hell because I don't believe what a bunch of people wrote in a book, even and eternity of hell is better than non-existance. At the very least, I'll still be around. I fully accept the eternal consequences of my living actions, whatever they might be.

I'm not a good person because a book or a guy with a white collar tells me it will get me into heaven. I'll do good works just because I feel like it, eternity will come for me when it's ready (whatever it may be). You get 1'd for trying to freak people out.

Insanity caused by pure pain and unsettled minds that have seen a lifetime of bible pushing, others telling others what to believe, and saying if you don’t you will go to hell. In the chaos that is the pain of death, any influence giving any hope will be grabbed upon, thus going outside of their common reasoning and in their final breaths doing whatever they can to "save" themselves. Plus you don’t see death until you are dead, so this is a bunch of bull crap.

Funny, how it was a bunch of reverands referring to Christ that would offer them salvation. Empirical analysis of the afterlife? No. Christian demagougery? Yes. There's nothing wrong with expressing your opinions about religion, but don't evangelixe Christ under the pretense of having a true discussion about the afterlife. That's disingenuous.
September 22nd, 2006

"Christ came to one region, to one area. A distinctive cultural phenomenon." Very good point Wolfson. Except that I think that supports our message. Had Christ not risen from the dead and been the source of salvation, there's no way He would have been as influential as He is. He only preached in public for a few short years, in a small area, without much of a following in His time, yet He has become without question the most influential person throughout history. It takes something like rising from the dead to do that.

I've read things like this before. I saw a "near death" survivor on TV talking about being devoured by creatures in black. He converted after being a skeptic all of his life. Some will blame it on psychology, but Freud never saved any souls.

If God truly does send people to eternal damnation simply for not believing in him or not being Christian, then He is the greatest evil we have ever encountered and I would NEVER worship such a cruel monster like that. Thankfully, I don't believe in the existence of a hell, nor do I believe God does any of these things. Fundamentalists like yourself, sir, live your religion out of fear and ignorance and try to convert others to do the same. Go back to Fundyland my friend, your ytmnd stinks.

"If God truly does send people to eternal damnation simply for not believing in him or not being Christian, then He is the greatest evil we have ever encountered" Sigh.. why do so many people think that Christians believe this? God does not send anyone to hell. Hell is the natural result of sin. God tells us "here's salvation, you don't have to go to hell." But He is not going to force us to take that. If we choose hell, that's our choice. And not choosing salvation is choosing hell. There can't be a third option.
September 22nd, 2006

Strange how these all happened within predominantly christian societies. It's called fear control, once the seed is planted it's damned hard to get out. You can see the same effect to a lesser extent in even military basic training, where the recruit degrades and demeans himself verbally because the Drill Sgt. makes them under threat of punishment. 'Are you a maggot c*cksucker?' 'YES DRILL SGT.' Fear. Nothing more important to survival. Human beings are bound as much as anything to the notion of self preservation, and when threatened with things we don't understand or can't control (our own deaths) that instinct goes haywire. I know, I've been in situations where I was powerless to help myself and others. It's a powerful instinct, but still just instinct.

You failerd to prove your point by using round logic. You can't convince someone of an afterlife, hell, whatever you want to call it by citing "sources" that are completely biased towards the subject? Empirical evidence is what I demand. Hellfire and brimstone tactics like this is why I left religion a long time ago" let condemnation be decided by self, not by force. well said gdroxor

If I had a near deat hexperience and I imagined the fires fo hell, it's obviously because I've shed my christian upbrigning, not because my mind carries those images in my subconcious and relates them to deat hand trauma. There haven't been many scientific studies on this matter at all proving where these visions" come from. No none. It's obviously because I said "f*ck jesus" and gave up http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3276334259793426171&q=penn+and+teller+bullsh*tmy religion, right?

"I've read things like this before. I saw a "near death" survivor on TV talking about being devoured by creatures in black. He converted after being a skeptic all of his life. Some will blame it on psychology, but Freud never saved any souls." Well, one part would be bacause most of Frued's tactics and terminology are not considered accurate these days, and the other part of you statement assumes that anyone else has. Unless you can prove that anyone a.) has a soul, b.) it can be saved and c.) the Christian god has saved it, your statement is devoid of all meaning. As is GendoIkari's, because "god" has "given" me the faculty of reason, and I would not betray it for some false god. Since you offer no more proof than any other religion, your claims are void.

If a extremely religious guy was to die and come back to life, that would he said? He would convince himself that there was god. If a normal sain person dide and came back. He/she wouldn't say anything like that. Religon ruins peoples lives phycologicaly. god is just a theory people thought up becuase of the lack of knowledge. you are a waste of oxygen you f*ggot!

Fear of oblivion, pain, and torment make anyone seek a higher power for ease of their way, and the imagery is common to the mythologies the person was immersed in throughout life. The imagery of evil is certainly not universal, but the "bad is coming to get me" is regardless of culture. You've simply shown a lot of people who lived nose deep in Christianity dying. How about other religions? You may notice a trend, with only the names changing.

September 22nd, 2006

"I don't see why a statement made without proof is considered void. People tell people things all the time without stating proof for it." Prove it. Also, the statement "God tells us 'here's salvation, you don't have to go to hell.'" implies the positive statement "god exists". All positive statements must be justified otherwise they are worthless and baseless, as are any claims you say that this "god" made.
September 22nd, 2006
(0)
lol, religion.
September 22nd, 2006

The statement "I like bikes" is a statement of opinion and is entirely subjective. The statement "God says..." is positive, in that it asserts something objective. I have no reason to believe that God said that I should believe in him, otherwise I will go to hell, thus your statement is meaningless. If it is merely stating your opinion, I really don't care because in my opinion I have no reason to believe that you either spoke to god or are a proper authority to tell me what it is that god did or did not say. Many Christians would disagree with your conception of heaven, hell, salvation etc. Thus, your statements are invalid factually and worthless to me in a subjective context.

September 22nd, 2006
(0)
Here's another example of what I'm talking about: "I bought a bike today". Now, this is not really an important statement, and we might assume that this person really bought a bike. That doesn't mean that it is true, it just means they don't care. If they care, they might ask, "well, where is the bike?" When the person answers, "I don't have it" it might cause an outside observer to question whether or not they bought a bike. Now, people may tell people things all the time without justifying their statements, but that is irrelevent to a conversation where we actually care whether or not said person actually bought a bike. Or, of course, you know, something like does a superhuman creature that created everything in existence exist? Bikes, not so important.

You'll never be able to redeem yourself after making yet ANOTHER YTMND to try to convince people of your religious beliefs. Now look - those people were told what would happen after death, so when they were dying, they all imagined the same thing, since they had all been TOLD the same thing. They all imagined hell and demons and fire because they had that idea planted in their heads over their lives. YOU ARE SUCH A F*CKING MORON. Interesting how your disclaimer here states that "if anything of a religious nature is too offensive for you, click back" suggesting that anyone who is a Christian will be/should be in total support of your message here and your actions on YTMND. Guess what? You're wrong. Peterguy and GendoIkari need to evaluate their reasons for standing behind a site like this that is disrepectful and in bad taste.

Particularly insulting is your portrayal of "Mr W." and company. Pretend you're a loved one of so called Mr. W... How would you feel if you came across a site like this that claimed someone you cared about was "wicked" for no specific reason other than he didn't believe something exactly as someone else did. How would you feel seeing someone describe his last moments on earth in such a spiteful manner?

Even great men are capable of despair when they are about to die. The unknown is a frightening thing and reaching out to a potential salvation isn't the same thing as getting touched by God on your last moments. This isn't something people 'need' to hear.

First, this was Voltaire's last words, "Adieu, mon cher Morand, je me meurs -- Adieu, my dear Morand, I am gone." He didn't die raving. Sigmund Freud was an atheist who also died peacefully. Tons of us accept death without fear. As for anyone who truly did die raving, remember this. Near death, the brain starts to go unconscious, and....*gasp* dreams.

I'll resubmit my comment since I really want whetstone to read it: "Your body sends out a huge dose of DMT to your brain when you die. DMT is a psychedelic drug, which is VERY illegal in the United States. Your body also sends out a small dose of it to your brain when you sleep. Look it up, moron."
September 23rd, 2006

From Erowid.org: DMT is a powerful, visual psychedelic which produces short-acting effects when smoked. It is naturally produced in the human brain and by many plants. EFFECTS LIST #POSITIVE * short duration * immersive experiences * intense open eye visuals and kaleidescopic patterning * powerful "rushing" of sensation * radical perspective shifting * profound life-changing spiritual experiences NEUTRAL * change in perception of time * auditory hallucination (buzzing) * colorshifting (for example red green and gold coloring to the whole world) NEGATIVE * overly-intense experiences * hard on the lungs to smoke * slight stomach discomfort * difficulty integrating experiences * overwhelming fear

"[The feeling of doing DMT] is as though one had been struck by noetic lightning. The ordinary world is almost instantaneously replaced, not only with a hallucination, but a hallucination whose alien character is its utter alienness. Nothing in this world can prepare one for the impressions that fill your mind when you enter the DMT sensorium. "The extraordinary brevity of the experience," he continued, "argues that it is incredibly harmless. It virtually disappears from the organism in about ten minutes. The paradox is that DMT is the most powerful yet most harmless of all these things. This is probably because, for reasons which are mysterious to us, DMT occurs in normal brain metabolism [in Serotonin]." -- Terence McKenna

It's not like you (or your sources) were with Voltaire when he died and I hardly believe that everything that happened during his death is documented. Another thing that’s interesting with Voltaire is that he lived during a period when the church had much more power than it has today. Where people were forced into believing heaven and hell etc. Luckily the church doesn’t have that power today (“thank God”). Today, people in many countries are free to believe whatever they want and make up their own minds. But sadly there’s still people like you, using the same method (fear) as they did a couple of hundreds of years ago… So would you please take your religious propaganda to another website cause I’m sick and tired of so called “facts” and arguments…

Sadly, I watch what was once at least an attempt at maintaining unbiased logic (although it proved an ultimate failure the first time around) dissipating before my eyes. You've cited works mostly, if not all, originating from the same man (Shaw), neglected any mention of cases of the opposite, and completely side-stepped that dementia can befall the terminally ill. Actually, PicnicPanther, many Buddhists were involved in killing and torturing Christians in Japan during the early 17th century. If you don't want to be part of a religion with a violent history, your best bet is never to be religious at all. Let pacifism be your only belief.

I find it both sad and annoying that you continue to post these fundamentalist Christian YTMND’s. Have you ever considered that some of us are quite happy with our religious beliefs, whatever they maybe, Christian or Not? How can you imply that just because some people were so beaten down with Christian dogma about the afterlife, that as they passed, their fevered minds manifested what they had been told for so long, that this is what awaits us all? I don’t believe in your heaven, or your hell. I’m a proud pagan, and I would appreciate it if you stop shoving your religious bullsh*t down mine, and the rest of the YTMND user’s throats. We don’t post about our religious beliefs, so please, stop forcing yours on us.

Boring Christian lies and propaganda. Even if every single story were true - and you'd have to show me a non-Christian source to even come close to proving that - there are STILL perfectly good explanations besides a magic Santa in the sky and sadistic ghosts with rakes throwing people in lava.

Now go have gay sex, rob a bank, kill someone in the process, and commit suicide, that way not even Hitler would be able to see you in "Hell" because he'd be a "circle" above you. This YTMND is completely retarded with no factual basis whatsoever. First off Voltaire's estate was never turned into a Bible factory or whatever the hell else your YTMND stated. "There is an apocryphal story that this house was purchased by the Geneva Bible Society and used for printing bibles, but this appears to be due to a misunderstanding of the 1849 annual report of the American Bible Society [1]. Voltaire's chateau is now owned and administered by the French Ministry of Culture." Proof: http://www.nzarh.org.nz/journal/2004v77n1aut.pdf Page 16 Also your logic that evolution doesn't exist is flawed by photographic evidence and years and years of study on top of impossible to fake remains.

what i wonder is what people of other religions say when they're dying... or perhaps people that haven't been introduced to religion. Do they suddenly feel this 'burning' as if they are slipping into hell? But then how can they repent if they don't even know about Christ? Shouldn't God at least let them know about these things before condeming them to eternal suffering. Nope... cause God's a jerk like that...
September 24th, 2006
(0)
If you're so into religion why are you on YTMND? it's pretty blasphemous in every way. There is no devil, There is no hell.Scaring people won't make them believe in something that doesn't exist. When you die and come back to this earth i'll tell you the same.
September 24th, 2006
(0)
Very well done, but your approach to the matter is ridiculous - just because a person is dying doesn't mean they see death, and those prepared to die often HAVE been sick - do you KNOW what a stroke is? You're almost insulting your religion by saying Voltaire became religious after losing some of his brainpower. There is no proof these skeptics SAW DEATH, they merely were on an approach, which is TERRIFYING for some.

I'm not going to rate it... but I did sit through the whole thing. I haven't read all the comments, but I have to say that I don't agree with your conclusion. In a way it makes sense, but you also have to consider that the concept of "hell" has been something that the church has long used to scare "nonbelievers" into attending. It's a big, frightening concept that is hammered into us at a very young age, and whether we ultimately believe or not, it makes a lasting impression.

Well done good sir but I must say to you as a fellow brother in Christ that scare tactics are not the way to go. Luke 6:35 "Love your enemies! Do good to them! Lend to them! And don't be concerned that they might not repay. Then your reward from heaven will be very great, and you will truly be acting as children of the Most High, for he is kind to the unthankful and to those who are wicked." Remember folks it's about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ not about being religious. Much love all.

While I don't deny that christianity is as plausible, not more, than any and all other religions faith based belief systems, I will however explain why these stories mean very little. All of those mentioned in these stories are all on common ground with one thing, they were in a christian environment and denied what was the religious norm with distinction. Given that their lives come near to an end and their lives were lived either against or in neglect of the religion they saw on a day to day basis
