On on the news post the never ending saga.
DDoSing is sending many fake TCP/SYN packets so that the server will not allow any more packets to be sent. Each packet has a fake IP. In order to complete a connection the server has to send a packet back, but since the IP's are fake the site can never connect. The server doesn't know the difference between the fake IP's and the real ones, so it will not attempt to connect to a legit user until the person DDoSing stops.
