The two songs are completely different in every respect, "american jesus" being an affront to the arrogance of the US president; "jesus of suburbia" is about being a bored, frustrated teenager in dead, suburban america; and trying to escape mundane life. So really, your analogy is completely irrelevant. Hardly any contemporary music is actually original. That's why bands often name their Influences. Dick.
