• In the medieval/renaissance era, the Church had two major problems with Chess: the practice of using dice to choose what piece to move, and the scandalous issue of a King with multiple queens. In a game that reinforced the proper social Hierarchy of the world, it was a little subversive.
• Originally the Queen was a "Vizier" when Chess came from India/Middle East, and the pawn promotion rule into a Vizier made much more sense.
