i did something different. i recorded this one in zsnes, and it exported with a less vibrant palette, but with MUCH smoother animation, as you can see. i'm not sure if the drawback is worth it, but i'm experimenting. what i didn't mention on the last one is that i've been using snes9x to do my recording, and using a SPC player to dump the music to MP3. again, all experimentation, but the aim of the game is still ambient. like crateria, this one is for jeyl.

Nicely placed. Sorry if this didn't get the positive attention you wanted, but I like it regardless! Cruising through this wrecked ship really brought me back to the dark and mysterious tones that I haven't experienced since the first ALIEN. Short but very memorable. Thank you for putting up the time to do this and I look forward to seeing your future work.

YTMND is the perfect place for this kind of stuff. as long as the loop is perfect, you can really showcase the atmosphere of games like this. granted, the item room was already done by tumult, but i think i did it a little better. there's just more animation, but then again it's possible tumult just wanted to make a smaller gif. i don't understand why he didn't finish the audio loop, though. In either case, it wasn't intentional - I thought he removed his since I couldn't find it.

my only problem with it is that it was not interesting. Nothing Happened... I guess I don't get it.

the purpose is really the atmosphere - not any real event. that's kinda 75% of the reason to play super metroid.

Think of it like a DVD menu. Most menus usually have animation and sound to them that are supposed to reflect the mood and atmosphere of the movie you're about to watch. And like a DVD menu, nothing happens unless you make it happen, kind of like in the game itself.

Regrettably, Super Metroid was slightly before my time. That may be why I do not appreciate this sort of thing... To me it's a still image, but to others it carries many associations and a more thorough appreciation of what it means. I hate not being a target audience.

blaze: it's hard to appreciate the atmosphere of the game without being born in time to appreciate the 16-bit era. it's also doubly hard without seeing the game truly in motion at your command. give me an email address, i'll set you up with the rom and emulator for you to give it a spin and see what we're talking about.

btw, it shouldn't be a still image... it should be an animation.

nah, jeyl's a guy who liked my original item room YTMND and asked me to make more, so i did. anyone who can see the ips we post on can attest to that.

Awesome work dude - please keep up these sites. I'd really love to see Lower Maridia - I feel that section of the game epitomizes the atmospheric feeling that the game masters.

I'm thinking of doing a music video of sorts that showcases all of the 2D Metroids (yes, even the maligned Fusion and obscure Return of Samus) to the OCR track I posted. It won't be a YTMND - if I make it a YTMND, it'll be an extraordinarily large one, and kind of misses the point of YTMND's content delivery anyway. Would there be any interest in it?

I give it a 5 because Super Metroid rules. Also, the crashed ship is really scary.

I'd like to see you do more than Super Metroid. Why don't you try some other famous games? Sort of a "famous moments in games of the past" series. Perhaps Metal Gear? (NES or MSX version) Perhaps the animation wouldn't be as impressive, but it wouldn't take as long and you could cover more games.
