ytmnd is postmodernism encapsulated It rejects, baits and switches anything that appeals directly and forces its viewers to only accept something that is a vague reference, despite it ostensibly not being about in jokes. Anything that attracts users from outside the inner circle of an indecipherable meme is to be ostracised. Awarding the artist for their efforts is looked down upon. Complex explanations have to be given for something that just looks funny. If you don't like it, you're stupid.

^ "truth," which is to say, "I agree." the beauty of postmodernism is that everything is postmodernism encapsulated. I named this site what I did to allude to the system of signs and signification that don't really point to anything. like you were saying, everything is self-referential (in our case here: fads, memes, etc). rewarding an artist, or a trickster, is the same as punishing them. either way creates meaning. give a mouse some cheese, but it's still in a maze.

on a finer point, there seems this constant debate among ytmnders that I translate for my own self as the tension between parody and satire. the distinction between the two is that parody mocks while satire instructs. the former denies the possibility of meaning and as such defies definition, and the latter seeks to supplant what it considers trivial or wrong with something of more import. both have there pluses and minuses for me. what I find annoying (but understandable) is this pervasive notion that

...that humor is the same as jokes and that to be funny requires some sort of punchline. while that conceit is certainly valid and I'll take 1's from those people with a smile, it seems rather limited to me. humor by its nature calls into question the context of its subject/object. usually, one punchline equates to one point, and I prefer my humor to paint with a broader brush. As for stupidity, well, see also the mouse I mentioned. Being smart merely means conforming to a particular logic, suceeding at

a certain standard of intelligence. Knowledge is that which is found by those who expect to find it. To relate that to ytmnd voting practices, everyone here has (or will have) developed their own expectation, their own definition, of what constitutes "a good site." The site then either meets their requirements or doesn't. Course, some then become enraged when others don't agree with their own whimsical measuring stick, and start

blasting a site's creator or fellow voters for not following suit. What they're really upset about is their own lack of persuasion and their inability to convince others that their rubric is gospel.
