Cannonball Decapitation
If you needed any more proof that Mel Gibson's "The Patriot" is complete and utter sh*t, and by sh*t I mean really awesome sh*t, here's all you need.

Combat in the Revolution was retarded. Why the f*ck do they just stand there and shoot each other like that? It wasn't honorable, it was just suicidal. At least Mel Gibson had the smarts to hide from the Brits and pick them off using the woods as cover.

I think it's essentially due to a jacobin attitude on the part of the generals; they want their whole army in one place so they can command it easily; guerilla forces are hard to control (particularly pre-radio). They probably also thought that troops would desert if the army was too spread out. Perhaps most important is the weight of tradition; fighting in tightly packed lines at 100 yards was just "how it was done". Anything else was subversive.

Just look at the Soviets pre WWII; Mikhail Tukhachevsky was executed on trumped up charges because he advocated more modern tactics that relied heavily on tanks and aircraft. Stalin saw this as a dangerous idea, so he offed him.

It just seemed like all that death amounted to nothing more than a formality. I guess it all has to do with the technology of the era, like you said. That makes sense. Those muskets don't reload automatically, after all.

This scene would have been freaking awesome with 3D glasses.
