The idea of "My God > Your God" has been a source of untold strife, and continues to be. A world without religion would be a world where everyone cherishes -this- life, and knows that their actions matter in the here-and-now to the people around them. It would be a humanitarian world, where no one relies on divine intervention, or rewards for the "fortunate dead". We would have to look out for each other.

I say that because religion has its ups and downs. The main thing is, it makes life not boring.

I mean, atheism has no ups or downs at all. That's why it's so boring.

Yeah, Clorox, what is this "peace and harmony" nonsense, anyhow? F*ck that, muslims and jews bombing the crap out of each other makes for much more entertaining nightly news.

StridentLobster, nice sarcasm. a) Jews don't kill Muslims. b) Muslims kill everybody. c) Religion makes life more interesting, like you just explained. d) Without religion, that wouldn't happen. e) I said religion has its ups AND DOWNS. Pay attention.

Lexeran, it's just attitudes like that that will keep us mired in the past. You don't aspire to something better? You think that because that's our history, it has to be our future? You seem to be ignoring the fact that we have the most developed consciousness and sentience of all the animals you mentioned. We have the ability to critically examine our actions, and make conscious decisions to improve them. To say that we're just animals, and therefore killing is what we do, full stop, is to appeal to

...the basest nature of humanity, and is therefore a f*cking cop-out. The world would be a much better place if people like you would just stop giving up on it.

Yeah, we're talking about the downs, here, Clorox. "Pay attention" indeed. Israel bombed the f*ck out of Lebanon, about six months ago. Thousands of muslim civilian casualties.

My point is doing away with religion wouldn't do sh*t and we'd still be exactly the same...

Lex, that's like saying people are exactly the same now as they were before the Enlightenment. Or before we created fire. We're talking about major socio-political change, here. No environment exists where such a change could occur and leave the people who experience that change in an unaltered state. Our consciousness evolves faster than our biology, and even the most -cursory- glance at history will tell you that. Did you know that, based on percentages of world population, the 20th century was one

of the LEAST violent? That birth rates in post-industrial nations are beginning to fall as their subsistence stabilizes? These are signs of progress, my man.

Blaming religion in general for the September 11th attacks is foolish. In my neighborhood there are many completely normal people who choose to attend church on Sunday. They’re religious but what did they have to do with the September 11th attacks? Absolutely nothing. Millions of people around the world follow various religions and most of them aren’t violent. Do you really think all those people should have their freedom of religion taken away from them because of the actions of a few?

Don't be f*cking retarded and so naive about humanity. If it wasn't about religious beliefs it would be about something else. People always find an excuse to kill each other. In more cases people actually behave better because of their beliefs, although treating other people with respect should just be common courtesy to begin with. I don't know why people have to escalate sh*t like this to a religious level when it's a human decision to do what you do in the end.
