Not all Christians view these matters exactly the same way. For instance, Catholic believe that Christ's death paid back (hence, 'redeemer') the debt caused by Adam and opened the gates of Heaven. In other words, people now had the opportunity to go to Heaven, but not necessarily a free pass. They still had to obey the laws of God, and whether or not they went to heaven would depend on their actions on earth.

but actually, more than that, they believe Jesus' death paid for all the sins of mankind, but we must be in God's favor by following his laws in order to gain this grace necessary for salvation.

that's not terribly different than protestants, though. The main difference is that prots believe you only have to believe in Jesus as your savior in order to guarantee yourself salvation, while for Catholics salvation is a lifelong struggle in which they can never think with certainty that they are going to heaven.
