The laws differ state by state, and I'm not going to look it up, but I believe you own your land down to somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-6 feet down, unless you get a special zoning permit to build a basement or run tubes deeper than that. I found this out in fourth grade after striking a 5 foot deep buried waterline while trying to dig a fort.

If I own the beach and there's a girl walking on the beach do I own her? What if she breaks her ankle? She can sue me!

Actually this question is a really simple one that I learned about in middle school... There are 2 pieces of title to owning the land... I don't know the technical terms but you own merely the parcel on top (and you need permits to dig) whereas, especially when buying a home, they don't sell you the rights for the property below ground.

Also if they find oil under your house they can legally dig up your backyard. You lose!

Technically, you own all the sky above your land, however they have the working deal of "We'll use the sky if we f***ing want to, and you get to enjoy the benefits of high-speed communications satellites and the like." Underground though, that's a different matter.

Yay for obscure Mario Paint music. Historically, the answer was 'yes'. Today, perhaps not.
