Maybe the rock's impossible to lift under our current laws of gravity/inertia. But if God is omnipotent, he could easily change those laws for the rock. BTW, I'm an atheist.

Also if there is free will, then God can't be all knowing since if he's all knowing, he should know what you will do before you do it so it is already decided for you.

"sorry man, only dumb people say God is omnipotent. The Torah and the Bible both say God cannot lie or sin. Kind of invalidates your argument." So maybe he just wants to make those dumb people's heads a splode. A noble cause if ever there was one.

Second: never saw the paradox here. Omnipotence regards God's power; the real problem is defining this "impossible-to-lift rock." Creating such a thing, if *omnipotence* is truly possible, would hence be IMpossible. That's not a paradox, that's just the limitation if you say that God (or someone) is omnipotent. End of story on that one, and reason why I 2 star.

Third and finally: I would've one-starred, but the "your head a splode" fad has always been cool, and you made it even cooler for using the strongbad graphic and sound. Congrats on that.

September 2nd, 2006

he can lift it because he uses god mode
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
The fallacy in the scenario is that you assume that god cannot become more powerful over time. The rock may be impossible to lift one moment, and then possible the next. Furthermore, it is only impossible to lift IF and WHEN god says it is impossible to lift. You assume that god both wants to lift the rock and doesn't want to lift thte rock, therefore you create the paradox artificially. Thus, your scenario does not disprove God.

September 2nd, 2006
(0)
Eh, all I gotta say to the people who say just change it to liftable is, change the ytmnd to add in that God created the super rock that can NEVER be lifted, and cannot be changed from this state. But the only thing that would happen then is god would become not-omnipotent. So he COULD create said rock, noone said he would since his omniscience comes into play, and knows if he did so he would no longer be omnipotent. Wow, I'm really f*cking drunk.
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
Well...God isn't bound my human limitations :D
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
Not a paradox. God is able to create a rock he cannot lift, but to do so he needs to strip himself of omnipotence. So he can both create a rock he cannot lift, and also lift any rock he could create. Not that mind boggling.

September 2nd, 2006
(0)
Pffft... This is an easy one: it's a no-win situation, yet God doesn't like to lose; he doesn't beleive in the no-win scenario and thus reprograms the simulation. Some might call it cheating, but God calls it changing the conditions of the test.

Well... if you fink about it..(Im an athiest but here goes) Cant god just creat a rock thats impossible to lift...try to lift it..and go..ah f*ck its too heavy..and then just change the rock from impossibe to lift to heavy enough so only god can lift it. there by getting around it, or better yet he just changes the defination of impossible to "Only god can lift it...for everyone else tis too heavy so stop trying ya bastards"...see 2 ways he can do it right there !

Paradox ytmnd's = tehpwnzoror
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
you could make it infinetly large and massive and still be able to lift it up, your problem lies in the semiotics of "impossible to lift" which really has nothing to do with omnipotence. also, who hasn't heard this before? you could have at least done the one where god makes a burrito so hot even he can't eat it.
September 2nd, 2006

yeah someone has said what I thought... the rock is impossible to lift when he originally makes it but when he wants to lift it it is no longer impossible as the conditions can change (e.g gravity). Maybe we're thinking too much into this
September 2nd, 2006

God can create an impossible to lift rock and also lift it, and it would still be impossible to lift - it's just God doing the impossible with his omnipotent powers.

It's a semantical game, like asking the question "what existed before the beginning of time?" The question makes no sense, because the verb "existed" can't be applied to a context outside of time. Verbs can't even exist without time. Enjoy your semantical games.

Someone asked this of our religion teacher (An Orthodox priest) in high school once. He responded, "Why would He want to?"
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
God doesn't do anything that goes against himself. That is the very reason why the paradox is untrue.
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
If God do expist, you shouldn't use the Bible as a guideline to conclude what charracter traits he/it/whatever has. Oh, and the paradox is easily solved. In its current state, its un-liftable. In order for God to move it, he has to turn it liftable; which he can, because he's omnipotent. So he can and can't lift an un-liftable rock. So there.

September 2nd, 2006
(0)
And he suddenly vanishes in a poof of logic...
September 2nd, 2006
(0)
this argument is stupid. no, nothing can break the laws of logic (even god, though some say he wrote them), but that does not mean god is not omnipotent. The word law is misleading, imho. I perfer the words fact or truth, because it says that's the way it is, there is no "breaking" it. It is you who is at fault for misunderstanding omnipotence. There are good arguments against the concept of god, and this is not one of them. Also, kingrames makes a good point. Also c*cks.

September 2nd, 2006

well, this depends on your definition of omnipotence. If you think God can do anything in the realm of possible actions then no he can't lift the rock. However if you think God's power reaches into the realm of impossible actions then yes he can lift the rock.

The basic flaw is the idea, not what god is, but what we are to god. If god is an omnipotent force in the universe, then in god's eyes this universe is not a tangible thing. So while god can create an impossible to lift rock in THIS universe, in the reality where/if god has a physical form, the rock does not exist.

The concept of G-d is a man-made fantasy and religion is a lie constructed to manipulate the ignorant masses. If you apply logic to faith, faith dissolves every time. Anyone with half a brain can see this quite clearly if they examine history. "Churchies" of any kind are brainwashed chimpanzees. All religions are the same... they are not based on any factual truth... only self-inflicted illusions. You can feel safe in dismissing all statements that begin with "The lord says" or "God says".

Those saying God does not work logically/is not logical are the only ones winning this argument, but I think some people had good intentions in saying those things. When I say God is illogical, I distinctly mean his existence doesn't make sense in our existence, so why bother postulating about something so improbably null? Logicizing the illogical is pointless, and whatever powers and qualities we give this non-existent entity are based on the contradicting limits of our human logic. also rocks

Everyone who 1's this just because they disagree with the author's percieved religious or non-religious bias are idiots of the highest caliber. If I were to grade this based on the YTMND itself, it would be a 4 because it was funny. As for the paradox, the definition of an impossible-to-lift rock must be one that stays impossible throughout eternity, since an omnipotent being could lift it in any way possible with ease, including traveling through time to do so. So this is a true paradox, f*ck downvoters.

You can't really define what omnipotence is or isn't. I think that if god does exist, the way humans try to explain him must be pretty comical. Kinda like ants talkin amongst themselves, in ant-speak, trying to comprehend nuclear science. I think the point is, that as humans, we can't explain gods power because he is not simply limited by "can" and "can't".

"You can't really define what omnipotence is or isn't" Yeah, like what kind of idiot attributes definitions to words anyway? It's like they are getting this from some kind of book or something. Reading is for nerds.

Awesome. I don't particularly like the ending, but this deserves a five just for the omnipotence paradox in a YTMND. Also for the sped-up "unfunny truth" music.

Oh, and it's easier to say that he just lifts the rock regardless of its unliftable status.

But what if he made the rock just a little liftable?

This Paradox is lame. He's omnipotent towards us, which excludes himself. So if he made an impossible to lift rock, it wouldn't be impossible to him, just to us.

"He's omnipotent towards us, which excludes himself." Wow i didn't know it was possible to be omnipotent towards something but not towards something else. Can i be omnipotent towards my girlfriend?

This isn't a paradox. A facet of omnipotence is the ability to give up omnipotence. So yes, God could create a rock so heavy he could not lifted if he chose at that time to give up his omnipotence. Not religious.

That's the point of the paradox though. We can't understand God SO WHY THE F*CK DO PEOPLE PRETEND TO "know" THAT HE EXISTS OR WHAT HE WANTS? Don't tell me God loves me when you don't know SH*T about him.

The easy and obvious answer is that he never lifts it. He would push the the ground down while maintaining the rock in a spacial stasis, therefore giving the appearance of it being lifted, when the truth is the rest of the world is being pushed down.

Good question. I actually asked a christan that once. They told me that he can both create a rock too heavy to life, and he can lift it too. Then they told me about how God doesn't have to make sence.

Hold on. You're defining this rock as an object that cannot be lifted by a being that can lift anything. Such a rock doesn't exist, and better yet, couldn't exist. Thus, it means nothing, and there is no paradox.
