Now what happens if you kill your grandfather's nieghbor's pet bird? HUH? HUH? I WANT ANSWERS DAMNIT!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Exactly, the paradox of time, i tell people stuff like this all the time. Also, LOL for "Sorry gramps this is for science" However, if you are a true believer in fate in that everything will happen the same way, you'll still be created just with a different grandfather, GrandpaX however, you might just go back in time and kill GrandpaX and would therefore have the original grandfather?
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Well it could be viewed as you went into a paralell universe and killed your paralell grandfather and thusly ceasing the existence of your paralell self

Way to manhandle the Up and Coming list....
August 29th, 2006

This could never happen
August 29th, 2006
(0)
lol yeah this is probably going to start some strange nerd argument but I never considered time travel a possibility, since if you were able to go back or forward in time then that would mean it already happened and thus the mindf*ck begins because I can't even explain what I'm getting at myself
August 29th, 2006
(0)
"Well it could be viewed as you went into a paralell universe and killed your paralell grandfather and thusly ceasing the existence of your paralell self" Wouldn't your paralell self do the same thing and void the existance of you and your paralell self?

As Hockey said, there can be many different things that could happen. When you kill your grandfather it will rewrite time, and you will have another grandfather. It will rewrite time. Much like how Fry became his own Grandfather. Since.. if time is already written.. then history already had you going back and killing your ' grandfather ', so he wasen't your grandfather to begin with.
August 29th, 2006

The grandfather is the key to his own undoing mwaaahahahahaha

To fast for my inibriated brain to compute. After slowing it down manually I concluded this ytmnd is still stupid. I don't think Picard and Lohan would have a child in the first place?
August 29th, 2006
(0)
there is no paradox because if youre still alive then you wouldve never killed your grandpa in the first place. if destiny had you plan to kill your grandpa, then you would cease to exist in the first place.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Thus furthering the idea that there is more than one literally existing dimension of reality.

so adino...youre 2ing the site because of the humor that shows Picard and Lohan having a kid? It's showing one of the many paradoxes scientists face themselves with all the time keeping many things theoretical

Not that clever, probably something everybody has thought about since the first time they learned the concept of time travel. But it's a well-constructed slideshow, and the fact that it loops really adds to the concept. Good YTMND

August 29th, 2006

Good explanation. I believe, though, that in reality, by traveling in time you place yourself on an independent timeline, and thus when you murder your grandfather, while you cease to be born on your original timeline, there is no reason why your particles should cease to exist on your independent time-traveling timeline. You get it?
August 29th, 2006
(0)
To quote Doc in BTTF 1 after altering the space time continuum by reading Marty's warning note - "Sometimes you just gotta say, what the hell!" This is hilarious, love it.

I was going to make a very offensive comment, but I decided not to, so I typed this instead.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Thats why if you did go back it time, many believe no matter what you do it is what is meant to happen. I remember a an episode of some show, I can't remember the name, but the plot is, some guy goes back in time and kills the baby hitler, but the nanny for the hitler household is afraid she will be blamed and buys a homeless baby from the street and that baby turns out to be the real hitler.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
If time machines are to exist, whether or not multiple universes exist or not already, they will be forced into existance to create the possibilities of any changes to be made while traveling time.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
entertaining, but if you can trtavel back in time, you can kill your grandfather. You'll still exist, because time isn't a tangible thing, it's just the space between observed events. You exist, you'll exist when you kill your grandfather, and when you return to the (alternate) future, you'll continue to exist...you'll have just never been born in that reality.
August 29th, 2006

"However, if you are a true believer in fate in that everything will happen the same way, you'll still be created just with a different grandfather" But Hockey, if everything will happen the SAME way then you're have the SAME grandfather.

August 29th, 2006

You create a different timeline. An alternate dimension, identical to the first until the time of your interference. Grandpa will be killed my an unknown assailant, as you and everything you brought with you will disappear. In the other timeline, you never return home. In yet another, you never go in the first place. And also, you grow a goatee.

God I love that episode of Futurama. "I don't get it, so who's my grandpa?" "Fry you bungling idiot... YOU ARE!" awesome. Anyway, this site sucks but I like to be reminded of things i like. so 3.

Funny, but nothing new. Einstein knew this too. Thing is that you won't neccessarily be born or go back in time again the second time, so basically you'd just have never existed. Still, clever loop. Einstein also said tiem travel forward is possible but really you may as well freeze yourself then. String theory works so much better for this...
August 29th, 2006
(0)
um ok
August 29th, 2006
(0)
I wish my dad was picard. Anyways, nice.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
You can become your own grandfather without time travel at all. You do need some help from your father though.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Nice way to explain it to people. Also, the string theory is mostly being ruled out as of late.
(0)
But if you have sex with your grandmother, then you can still be born, as your own Grandfather.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
lol, mindf*ck.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Yes, but your time machine can go forward in time. So after you kill your grandfather, you would be able to go back, but it would be to a world in which you never existed, and are a stranger. You would live in this world for the rest of your life. Now, if you DIDN'T kill your grandfather, and you went forward in time to right before you left, and prevented yourself from going back in time, you'd have a new twin.
August 29th, 2006

I haven't seen a flying delorean in... over 30 years.

Too bad time travel aint possible.

I believe the quantum world will be the secret to understanding a lot of time's mysteries. Let's just hope we don't accidently destroy the universe first

WTF?!?! It's too confusing!! *pulls out gun* *blows brains all over floor*
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Wait... you trying to tell me that I want to have sex with my mother?!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Well, I guess once you kill your grandfather you should just poof and no longer exist, but if you do exist like someone said above and can go back to the future and live as if you never existed... then my head explodes.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
This is why time travel is impossible.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Actualy as stated in the Back To The Future Movies, If you go back in time and alter the past, you create a new line of history, so traveling into the future after you killed your grandfather would take you to what 2006 would be like without your bloodline. 5 stars none the less!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Very nice, although most of us who kill our grandfathers don't necessarily go back in time...wait, what?
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Oooh, a lesson in not changing history from "Mr. I'm-my-own-grandpa"! Let's get the hell out of here already! Screw history!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
The grandfather saying "I win the internets!" was the best part.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Time travel does seem to be possible but not very praciticle. It would require ALOT of energy. But, I think you would probably create an alternate timeline.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
...That's deep, man, deep.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Whoa, which is why time travel isn't possible lol
August 29th, 2006
(0)
The multiple worlds theory, if correct, disproves the grandfather paradox. See, by going into the past, a new timeline is generated since you are out of place from your natural place. Any changes you make are actually affecting a different timeline, not your own timeline of origin. Time travel and the theories behind it are more complicated than people make it out to be.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Excellent use of looping!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
time looping!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
you fail, please try again ^_^
August 29th, 2006
(0)
lol you solved it!
August 29th, 2006
(0)
the answer lies in the 5 dimension (and the 6th if you're traveling) Truely, you travel to an alternate timeline. If you go back to where you were you'll be back in the "normal" timeline. So in one your grandfather doesn't survive while the other you never killed your grandfather.

in fact, you can't go back in time with the intent to change something. now, accidents, however, are fine in some cases.

The only true explanation is that time travel is impossible.

Yes, I have that about that many, many times before.
August 29th, 2006

you biilt a time machine to fix somthing, you fix it you have no reason to build the time machine.. time machine was never built
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Aah, Ah ha. That's what I've always said. I've always used an example of stealing a Black Sabbath song though and making it your own.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Except that isnt the grandfather paradox, sorry for the low vote, but it's for science! The grandfather paradox is when a timetraveler, such as Fry, goes back in time and has sex with his grandmother, thus ensuring his family line will continue to his birth.
August 29th, 2006
(0)
Within 5 seconds I check my sources, and wikipedia says you are correct, 5ved. Now i must find a delorean and kill my past self before I foolishly comment
August 30th, 2006
(0)
Ah, one weakness. You can't go back in time before the creation of the time machine.
August 30th, 2006
(0)
why the hell is this worthwhile!? that's pretty much the premise of the whole movie.... dumb sh*t
August 30th, 2006
(0)
No. The moment you kill grandfather, alternate timeline starts, and you likely disappear the moment you stab grandpa. Grandpa doesn't live. The end.
August 30th, 2006
(0)
life036, no that's not the premise of BTTF, Marty did not go back in time to kill his grandpa you dumbass. Totallylame, since when do you know all the answers to questions that have baffled scientists for years?
August 30th, 2006
(0)
intriguing. it would just look like a man stabbing an old man and subsequently disappearing as the knife wound healed.
August 30th, 2006
(0)
how can you go forward in time if it's not predetermined? if it is predetermined, then there has to be a "supreme being"
August 31st, 2006
(0)
nice.. except that it's linear.. one would happen before the other. that is, you would build the time machine go back and then kill him. you don't need the time machine after that. you don't live. cool ytmnd though.

===so adino...youre 2ing the site because of the humor that shows Picard and Lohan having a kid? If you travel back in time and kill your grandfather, you will still exist but won't be born. Freaky, eh? You see, time is considered a dimension, like space. Think of a ruler and a block. The block starts off at the 12' mark. You then move the block backwards to the 4' mark. Does the block cease to exist since it is no longer at the 12' mark? No. Time will be different, but it's not required that something will happen to have happened after time is rewritten.
September 3rd, 2006
(0)
Philosophy of time is too convuluted for a YTMND...
September 3rd, 2006
(0)
When you kill him you start another time string. You simply can't use your time machine to return to the same present you remember.
September 3rd, 2006
(0)
There are 2 ways this could go. Either the universe goes into a constant cycle of calculating how to continue with time(Much like this looped YTMND) or it creates 2 alternate dimensions, one where your grandfather died and you never exist except as your grandfathers killer, and the other where you do exist but your time machine fails to work so you can't go back. I've thought about this ever since I heard of the idea of a timemachine

SNAKKEEEEE,SNAKKKEEEE!!!! Each time traveller would have their own seperate universe. Therfor you would be in one existance where you were born and the other existance would be where you were never concieved. This is heavy.
September 9th, 2006
(0)
I believe this is impossible to do. Unlike some other time travelling paradoxes. Cause if you exist then you didn't kill your grandfather, then no point trying.
September 10th, 2006
(0)
this is nothing new, but you did a good job with it, especially with the "sorry gramps, this is for science" thing and the missing image icon for the child
September 18th, 2006
(0)
sorry gramps this is for science won me over
September 19th, 2006
(0)
well certaintly you know this is false because a paradox can not exist. So if you did go back in time you would go back into an alternate reality where u exist in the past. If you kill your grandfather there, he will still be fine in your reality, but dead in one... You just hafta go with the theory that there are infinite different realities. Plus killin your gramps is an awful thing to do =(
September 19th, 2006
(0)
Let's not forget the "Im my own grampa" theory. Damn gramdma was foxy back in '31...
September 19th, 2006
(0)
This is assuming that: (a) There is only one timeline and it is naturally 1-dimensional (b) Each cause-and-effect is serial and interdependent - there is no "predestiny" or "eventuality" for events (c) The "butterfly effect" is not just a thought-experiment, but a reality, in that miniscule events can have drastic consequences... But of course (a) There MUST be something outside the 1D timeline in order to timetravel, so parallel potential universes are implied (b) Not many events actually CAUSE other events - they contribute to them, certainly, but it's almost never a single circumstance influencing the event, and (c) Butterflies don't cause hurricanes - weather conditions do. Damn, this is good weed.
