yeah, its a big deal, and there's also talk of ending "net neutrality" which means that your ISP can preferentially direct you to sites that pay them more money for you to go there. Which is bullsh*t.

if they passed the no more neutrality bill, I think the companies who did it would be in utter chaos due to the mass of leet net users in revolt.

Thanks for the support everyone. To those who think this ISN'T a big deal and no one will sue Max, remember we're dealing with the people who sue soccer moms without computers for file sharing, or preteen girls.

The net nutrality thing is intresting. The only talk of ending comes from the people who want to protect it. Those who object to the protection nithere want nore are able to end net nutrality. The DMCA has already shut down a large segment of Star Trek fan sites while Paramount was being asholes. Including Spock.com and that had ZERO trek content just the name (and Spock is a human name)

The American government trying to control the internet?! What a f*cking crock of sh*t. This probably just for starters.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
im sure more than half of ytmnd users have no idea what u r talking about or care, but ty so much for informing those of us who do care and WILL take part in defending the internets.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
I care. However, I know that if sh*t does go down, YTMND will do a Pirate Bay: split across the world, on many servers. The Internet is mobile and infinite. It cannot be regulated. It cannot be controlled. Digital Anarchy, my friend. But regardless, thanks for the warning. I already know the EFF and support them.

This is getting way out of control; the media just needs to let it happen. They are making enough money as it is.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
Wait... Doesn't that just mean that the makers of the content can get it removed or censored? I'm sure the makers of whatever content we're using love the publicity and advertising. I'm not sure about this, but I think they're targeting toatlly different sites.
June 7th, 2006

Dont the RIAA and the MPAA realize that ytmnd and other internet meme inspire the world including the FILM INDUSTRY. Take a look a Xmen.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
I would add, vote Libertarian to the list of things you can do to help. Republicans and Democrats don't care about the Constitution, and they're not going to let the fact that most of the bills that the Republicrats write are unconstitutional stop them.
June 7th, 2006

This site is a form of parody, and so it's probably legally covered for the same reasons as other forms of parody...

Whether or not YTMND is really in danger, I believe that our actions are nesisary. The Associations need to learn that they exist because of us, not in spite of us.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
I hate to tell you this but the censorship battle has been waging since the early 60s, perhaps longer and in truth it's (pro censorship) losing more ground with every decade. (It's never truly won a victory in fact.)Shaikoten has made a very valid point though, if you don't like what's happening you have to do something about it, get involved, don't just bitch. Well made site.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
I'd write to my Senator... except I'm Canadian.
(0)
^well said, but i think the so-called Libertarian party has been overthrown by liberals. We need a real libertarian/constitutionalist party that doesn't have weird agendas in their platform like the current 3rd parties do.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
but i'm just one man , what can i do ?
June 7th, 2006
(0)
lol 3rd comment. Anyway, I doubt YTMND will ever be in danger as a whole by those groups. Even if that ever occurs, the EFF would likely back the site enough to win the legal case.
(0)
that was to cvramen, btw.

Well Bondo, for starters you can vote. And not just vote, but know who you're voting for. Work at a local level, attend city council meetings.

Fight the DMCA because it's more than a fight just for YTMND. The DMCA destroys the right to develop software openly and freely, a few projects that have been threatened or killed by the DMCA: mplayerm, DVD-XCopy, Xine, Linux to name a few. It also drives up the price of consumer electronics because produts are more expensive to design and develop. The DMCA is yet another law made to make the rich richer and the poor poorer.

The current administration and congress are royally screwing over the internet. MAKE YOURSELF HEARD THIS NOVEMBER BY VOTING!!!
June 7th, 2006
(0)
Even if you aren't of voting age, this law does affect you, if you have purchased software or an electronic device in the last 5 years this law has affected you in some way. Write to you representative and you senator showing your opposition for this law.

The United States claims to be the greatest "democracy" in the world. While at the same time, peoples rights and freedoms are being pushed aside so that corporations can make super-profits and fully control whatever they patent. The internet is a medium through which we may practice our fundemental freedom of speech, lets keep it that way.
June 7th, 2006
(0)
I dont live in America, but I shall do my bit by 5'ing this site. And if YTMND were ever to become P2P in any form, I would gladly take a chunk of it.
(0)
SIR, YES SIR. I work for the New York State government, so I hear about this kinda crap all the time... and it's DAMN scarey some of the things that go on. GET INVOLVED, GUYS. This sh*t is REAL.
June 7th, 2006

The more I learn about the actions of the US government, the more I fear them assasinating me randomly.
June 7th, 2006

Fair use is under attack. In plain English it means that if you did not record the audio then you cannot use it for free usage (which is currently protected under fair use). Good coverage of this and I hope the YTMND-ers old enough to vote pay attention.

June 7th, 2006

To arms! In all seriousness, this is important. Here in the U.S, the MPAA and RIAA have been getting away with damnable things. With every act they get through congress, it becomes harder and harder for us to do anything. We must draw the line here!
June 7th, 2006
(0)
What's so new about this information? And why should a site which is one parody after another be concerned, given that parodies are one of the most protected derivative works in existence?
June 7th, 2006

June 7th, 2006

OVERTHROW THE GOVERNMENT!!!
June 7th, 2006
(0)
1 for being alarmist. Parody is and will always be protected under free speech. There is endless legal precedent for this, enough so that Congress can never undo it. YTMND is perfectly safe.
(0)
I thought the DMCA was in uhm, 1998 Bad late 6/6/6'er.
June 8th, 2006
(0)
The DMCA has been around for almost 10 years, but it's the interpretations of it in court that are having the most devestating effects. Also, while this site is parody for the most part, not everything is. For example, the mystery song ytmnd which distributes the entire MP3.

I'd write to the MPAA, but I'm in teh land of the chavs AKA Briton. Sorry :(
June 13th, 2006
(0)
I've had the DMCA dropped on my *ss before, so I know how it feels. Max prolly has just as much of a problem with Scientology right now though. Tom Cruise is gonna track Max down and have people stalk him or some sh*t most likely.

Hell, you could say we'd be defending the whole internet. Almost all of the internet is parody or porn. So what do we get without parody? Too much porn. (yes, there is such a thing as too much)

Sadly enough, most people on here are kiddies and can't do sh*t about this problem.
June 30th, 2006

#1. A large portion of the site's population is lazy/underage/uninformed. So asking them to actually put a significant effort into changing something in REAL LIFE isn't going to happen. #2. Let the internet lobbyists do their work without having "leet" kids email them with garbage about how we need to protect ourselves from "noobzorz" in congress. #3. It's not At ease, men. It's At ease, soldiers.

It's far more important than max maybe getting sued. It's about saving the internet, period. Unless you want to start paying a tax on the internet for a 'net your ISP regulates, get to writing some f*cking letters.

exactly what about the DMCA makes yourthemannowdog.ytmnd.com not fair use? The right to parody is a part of the constitution. I will admit that there are quite a few ytmnds that simply rip off things intended to be jokes in the first place. These are indeed not fair use. There are much more, however, that are fair use. Anyways, what specifically is going to make parody of this kind illegal?
