Fived until disputed by some other intelligent sounding bloke who will one you. Also I'm not British.

you never stated the assumption that a = 1, so therefore your rebuttal fails.

um sir, if that proof was true it'd be true for all X, meaning it doesn't matter what number you put in for a, it will still come out 0=0, thus YOU FAIL.

lol fallacious math proof

divide by zero? un-mathable! Needs more (0/0). LOL infinity.

I'm guessing the 1's were an example. If a=b then a-b=0 no matter what a and b are, so you can't divide by a-b.

Correct.

most people dont catch it lol :)

0/0 = 0 because you can't make infinity with nothing, just like how measured calculations like 0/1 = 0, or even 0/0.5 = 0, but that would make this equation 2 = 0 in the end. Either way, "a" is undefined, and nowhere in the equation helps in defining it, so a random value won't work.

ok, one more time peeoples. you can't divide ANYTHING by zero, why? because if x>0>x/0, then it's undefined, but, if x=0/0 then it's indeterminate. basic rule of calculus

lol, you divide each side of the equation by (a-b), thats all

IF A=B THEN A-B=0 SO YOU CAN'T SIMPLY DEVIDE BY A-B, HOLY sh*t YOU GUYS REALLY ARE DUMB, MAX WASN'T LYING.

errr, divide, not devide. oops

However, its perfectly fine to multiply 1 by 0.
May 19th, 2006

thus making the equation end at 0=0, and you gave me two stars for stating that? wow, that must be why you failed math......

Barely into Algebra 2, irregardless I still don't see any division signs. Following the notes at the side, (2)(0) = 1(0), would indeed give you 0 = 0, but thats not the point. There is no division in there. You might want to get a refund on your PhD, prof.

SIGH, in order to cancle out (a-b) on both sides, you must divide by it. technically (a-b)/(a-b) =1(and X*1 will allways = x) however, since a=b, (a-b)=0, and you can't divide by zero. like i said, learn to use algebra.

Why did you bother making this, knowing that only children would argue over it? If you're interested in joke proofs, check out mcraeclan.com/MathHelp/Jokes.htm. With a little effort, you can find the flaw in each one... but some are pretty tricky.

(removes glasses intelligently) the mere fact that division by zero renders illogical results indicates a fundamental flaw in the structure of logic and mathematics. to say "you cannot divide by zero" is not a statement of logic, but an imperative command to avoid the confusion which inevitably results upon contact with reality.
