Well, if had killed his ancestor then we wouldn't exist, so then he couldn't have gone back and killed his ancestor, but then he wouldn't have been killed, then he would exist, so he could have gone back and killed him, but..ad infinitum.

Yes, Carltheshivan, it's called the grandfather theory. You can't go back and kill your ancestor erasing yourself because if you erased yourself you'd never have gone back in time to alter history. But 5'd for time travel none the less.
