The industrial output of the north, not to mention the population, was so much larger than that of the south, that a confederate victory was more or less an impossibility.

Don't be so sure. After the Union defeat at Bull Run in Manassas Virginia (the first major battle in the war) Confederate forces only had to march another 20 miles north to seize Washington and end the war before it even began. But they didn't. The Union got lucky.
