most amazing thing i've learned in college
DISCLAIMER: PERFORM AT OWN RISK! (SAFETY NOT GUARANTEED!) a neat trick thats really got to be done first hand to be fully appreciated. basically, you microwave any foil-backed wrapper for a few seconds, and it will shrink.

Isn't there some kind of metal lining in those bags?
November 17th, 2009
(0)
Fire is even more fun in a microwave. Stick a toothpick in something so its vertical, light it, and put in in for 30 seconds.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
yeah
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
my wife's gonna be pissed about what I do to the microwave.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
This YTMND will usher in a new age of man.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
The effort that went into this YTMND alone is worth a 5. Also, try putting CDs in the microwave. Use blanks or AOL CDs. They put on quite a light show for about 3 seconds.
July 3rd, 2006
(2)
just watch somebody burn their house down doing this
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
that's good.
July 3rd, 2006

Interesting.

I can't wait till your microwave explodes and half of the world goes with it! =-o
July 3rd, 2006
(1)
o rly? thats not very nice of you to say such things! but seriously, its pretty harmless. there was an episode of mythbusters on discovery channel that debonked the whole "your microwave will explode if you put metal in it!" urband legend.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
i'm glad i'm not payign you college expences.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
is that...safe?
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
They shrink better in the oven and I learned of this in 3rd grade.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
wow.. so i see
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
more like grade school
July 3rd, 2006

Truly fantastic. I love you.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
you forgot to mention the part where you inhale the noxious chemicals and imagine that this would make a winning ytmnd, lol
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
yesssssss!!!! i just tried it...it totally works!
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
It won't blow up, but I think the Mythbusters said something about the magnetron's life being shortened if you pull crap like this. No explosions--just excessive wear from misuse. 5 for yay.
(0)
Excellent find sir. If I may suggest, place a small glass of water in the microwave along with the snack bag to prevent damage to the microwave oven. CDs are even more amazing and make neat fractal patterns.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
yea i saw that episode of mythbusters, i no longer fear my microwave. i used to go into coniptions if i accidentally left a spoon in there or something. good ytmnd
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
um, why would you want do this in the first place?
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
Hah, it worked. Wonder how long before someone f*cks up and posts "IT CAUGHT ON FIRE YOU DICK"
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
not coniptions, convulsions silly me
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
5'd FOR f*ckING UTZ CHIPS
July 3rd, 2006

IT CAUGHT ON FIRE YOU DICK
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
i haven't tried it on a full bag.. i've tried it on one of those "grab bags," the medium-size lays. it still works, but of course, it requires more time to shrink to smallest size. i can't fit a large bag into my microwave...
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
lol????
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
Mine went 'kapoof' and frizzled up. It smelled all plasticy and melty. Is it supposed to spark so much when you do it?
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
you seriously need to goto class
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
yup! its supposed to spark and pop.. i cant explain to you exactly whats going on, but something with the foil making it really hot and then it shrinks. it does produce an odor that may, in fact, be a health hazard... but i'm fine, and i've been doing it for months now!
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
I dare you to do 8 minutes.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
Awesome music selection, awesome animation, and finally, 5 for Stephanie. lolped
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
but if you're serious about doing it the right way, try it out a couple times to find the best time for your microwave; and best size/time ratio to make it as small as possible before melting into goo.
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
I've known this for a while but the music and taping methods earn this my 5.
July 3rd, 2006
(1)
Your college education is finally paying off!
July 3rd, 2006
(0)
10 people's houses will now burn down.

July 4th, 2006
(0)
Oh. Awesome.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Lol I wanna try that ,but then again....
July 4th, 2006
(0)
try next with knives and forks :) I hear they take a whole minute to shrink
July 4th, 2006
(0)
1'd because this is NOT safe, bags of chips DO HAVE metal linins, THUS making explosions while in the microwave.. [Lesson: Do NOT put metal objects in microwave]
July 4th, 2006
(0)
sweet
July 4th, 2006
(0)
not really useful, but informative. And it was pleasant to watch, not to mention the small gif size couldnt be beat, plus good music
July 4th, 2006
(0)
That is awesome!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
that's f*ckin AWEsome
July 4th, 2006
(0)
"Higher" education. lol
July 4th, 2006
(0)
you can do the same thing with any heat source. Throw it into a campfire and see what it does.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
if you throw it in a fire, i doubt you'll get it out looking as nice as you can via microwave. also, it only takes a few seconds this way - how long does it take for you oven people to shrink stuff? :)
July 4th, 2006
(0)
fine then use charcoal and put it on the grill. flames will blacken it yes. Also, for your next experiment try a 9 volt battery and lean down in front of the door to watch and see all the cool action.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
You should have learned to put the moves on drunk sluts instead :(
July 4th, 2006

July 4th, 2006

you are gonna ruin your microwave.
July 4th, 2006

The most important thing that I learned is that boys have a penis and girls have a vagina.
(0)
One word: awesome. 5'd for the future of mankind.

July 4th, 2006

OMFG WTF I TRIED DOING THIS AND MY MICROWAVE CAUGHT FIRE AND BURNED MY HOUSE DOWN! NOW I'M HOMELESS... WTF!!!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
if you're wondering how I typed that or this, I'm at a friend's house
July 4th, 2006
(0)
this made me lol
July 4th, 2006
(0)
There are three unstoppable things in this ytmnd. Hasty chip dump and brush, lol baking, and the fact that it encourages people to perform a relatively dangerous act.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
This is the most amazing thing I've learned ever now!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I learned that when I was in 8th grade and got over it about a month later, let's stop lying about our ages shall we
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Funny show. Don't think I want to risk ruining my microwave to try it though.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
cute? no. stupid? yes. +2 just for effort.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
The reason bags shrink in microwaves has nothing to do with heat, by the way, it's because the waves hit the bag, bounce off from the metal, hit the bag again, etc etc
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Yay, small chip bags. :)
(0)
I love you.
(0)
I laughed, I cried.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
that's actually a pretty good animation. even though the quality sucks.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
"The most important thing that I learned is that boys have a penis and girls have a vagina." HAHAHAHA Impossible
July 4th, 2006
(0)
loooooo
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I like the fact that you spent so much time making this...what is otherwise a pointless demonstration.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
yay for you
July 4th, 2006
(0)
WOW!!!!!11
July 4th, 2006
(0)
i did that with a capri sun drink pouch.....
July 4th, 2006
(0)
don't do this in my f*cking microwave anymore you jackass
July 4th, 2006
(0)
i wonder if its possible to cause the shrinkage to follow a specific texture, ie, the design on the bag.
July 4th, 2006
(1)
You know what else shinks ina microwave really cool? An aerosol can. Really. Set it for about 5 minutes....
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Learn English too please.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Learned this in grade 2, so 2 stars
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Purely awesome... I love the music and love the animation (although you could use better quality).
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I..love you.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
boring.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
We were doing this in first grade..we also didn't know about saftey back then too.
July 4th, 2006
(0)

July 4th, 2006

July 4th, 2006
(0)
UNIVERSE TIER
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I used to do this everyday back in high school. It makes your microwave stink really bad if you do it enough.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I'm... I'm gonna try this. Also 5'd for the comments alone, the YTMND is in a tier by itself anyway.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
College education, ftw.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
NO ITS NOT SAFE!!! YOU WILL CAUSE ARCS INSIDE YOUR MICROWAVE LOL 5D BEFORE YOU BLOW SOMETHING UP
July 4th, 2006
(0)
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Wow. I definately need to do this in place of fireworks today.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
awsome
July 4th, 2006
(0)
lol, if this is what you really learn at college then I suddenly have a greater urge to go
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Not sure why I enjoyed watching this, it's completely illogical.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
The amount of alcohol required to figure this out is why college costs so much.
(0)
for some reason, the image quality just strikes me as completely flawless.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Awesome'd NOw that this is in the top 15 everyone will learn and burn thier house down in the process
July 4th, 2006
(0)
is it not ironic that the most amazing thing college has learned is how to shrink your intelligence?
(0)
You probably paid 100'000 bucks for your college education and alls you got was this lousy technique. :(
July 4th, 2006
(0)
"...magnetron's life being shortened if you pull crap like this. No explosions--just excessive wear from misuse..." yeah that's what I've heard too. I did that once with a little container of butter (foil backed) just after I woke up to get breakfast (so I wasnt really thinking). I wouldn't do that too much unless you don't mind junking up stuff with broken microwaves.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Let's see how quickly this ruins my microwave...
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I'll lol if some dumbass gets hurt trying this and sues YTMND.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Cool, but I feel bad for whomever is paying for your education (unless, of course, you are yourself)
July 4th, 2006
(0)
omg you chip waster!
July 4th, 2006
(1)
thats a nice quality gif
July 4th, 2006
(0)
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Now stick your head inside the microwave and inhale deeply. Do this with a few bags until you've killed enough braincells that you can't breathe anymore. And you're done. This is cool, but not really ytmnd-worthy. More like a flash animation, or maybe a forum post. Inkdrinker would have three words to say to you.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
IT CAUGHT ON FIRE YOU DICK
July 4th, 2006
(0)
the music makes it
(0)
Damn, that owns so much
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I like this ytmnd, it's well done, and the animation is superb. Also i love it how you just empty the chips onto the bench and then push them off...lol
July 4th, 2006
(0)
the music really makes this ytmnd work
July 4th, 2006
(0)
also, "This YTMND will usher in a new age of man." - LoL
July 4th, 2006
(0)
very "cute", but i like my microwave too much to ignore its "no metalic objects" warning:D
July 4th, 2006
(0)
That was the single most pointless/best optimized/lol, baking ytmnd ever.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Isn't College wonderful...I learned to make Dry-Ice Bombs.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Hooray science!
July 4th, 2006

July 4th, 2006
(0)
Pixilation?
July 4th, 2006
(0)
-3 for "baking, lol" instead of "lol baking"
July 4th, 2006
(0)
You are an insult to intelligence
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Took you that long to figure it out. You probably won't be in college much longer, it seems.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
OMFG YOU WASTED THE CHIPS! Think about the homeless plz...
July 4th, 2006
(0)
lol, radiation
July 4th, 2006
(0)
5'd not just for how amazing that is, but also 5'd because you put a lot of effort into it and it looks visually great for a ytmnd... oh and great song choice as well.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Do you think washing out the bag first would have better results?
July 4th, 2006
(0)
i used to shrink bags of chips with a lysol-lighter-flame thrower as a kid
July 4th, 2006
(0)
anyone tried it with the chips still in the bag ?
July 4th, 2006
(0)
yay, now that i learnd that i don't have to go to college!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
This is now the most awesome thing I have learned on YTMND
(0)
boom
July 4th, 2006
(0)
so college IS useful!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
That can't be good for the microwave, lol.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
5'd because it looks like it took a lot of work and gave me an excuse to put a chip bag in the microwave. But before I try this, if I put it in for 2 long will it catch on fire?
July 4th, 2006
(0)
wow. i'm gonna try this now.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
That's not wise since if you overcook it and melt the bag, it will probably smell quite bad and possibly be toxic. Your roomates if any will kill you and besides, this just isn't a smart thing to do...
July 4th, 2006
(0)
^ agrees with andre
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Did it took you all the way to college to learn that plastic shrinks when heated? f*cking idiot.
(0)
lol
July 4th, 2006

Fecking awesome man! I'm so doing that now....

July 4th, 2006
(0)
Radiation poisoning FTW!
July 4th, 2006

July 4th, 2006
(0)
-2 for waisting chips
July 4th, 2006
(0)
lol! Learned that in jr. high school... one kid set the cafeteria on fire practically. They didn't let us do that anymore.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Pretty cool. Microwaving CDs, as someone else said, is pretty cool also. They turn out like http://www.istockphoto.com/file_thumbview_approve/824278/2/istockphoto_824278_crackled_cd_rom_after_being_exposed_to_microwave_radiation.jpg after 4 or 5 seconds.

(0)
shame you never learnt how to spell properly
July 4th, 2006
(0)
who am is?
July 4th, 2006
(0)
This looked kinda cool, so I tried it out yesterday before I went to work. Turns out our microwave was too old to do this correctly. Instead it began to spark way too much and before I could open it to stop it from catching on fire, it burst into flames. It quickly spread to the table cloth and before I could put the fire out with my sink, it caught the curtains on fire. Then my cat caught on fire. NEDM
July 4th, 2006
(0)
xD Oh my god, that is AWESOME! Hm... Now I just need my parents to leave for a few hours and a chip bag...
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Meh. At least you showed me what song that was. I was curious for the longest time.
(0)
Used to do this all the time.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Flippin' amazing!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
Amazing.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
I totally just saw that thing spark.
(0)
i new what this was gonna be when i saw bagshrink :P my old babysitter when I was a kid used to tell me and bro about these things all the time (much to the dismay of my parents) but she told us if you put it in for too long it would explode or burst into flame or something, cause some people were doing it at school and someone tryed doing it for a really long time (like maybe 10 seconds more) and there was a small fire :P haha it also reminds me of when my friend put a sponge in the school microwave in 8th
July 4th, 2006
(0)

July 4th, 2006

At college, I put metal in teh microwaev. Go science!
July 4th, 2006

July 4th, 2006

5'd for T.I.!
July 4th, 2006
(0)
That's pretty cool. But you do need to change the sh*tty music.
(0)
stop eating chips, fatty.
July 4th, 2006
(0)
o rly? thats not very nice of you to say such things! but seriously, its pretty harmless. there was an episode of mythbusters on discovery channel that debonked the whole "your microwave will explode if you put metal in it!" urband legend. BULLsh*t, THEY DIDNT PUT ENOUGH METAL IN IT!!!
July 4th, 2006

Did you know a grape will catch fire if you cut it in half and put both halves next to each other in the microwave?

I was trying to think up a witty line about how you must be retarded if it took you until college to realize this, but then realizing nobody else did, and that I was incapable of conceiving said witty line, I retracted and gave a five. ......You're welcome???

Um, yeah, that smell is from the plastic on the outside melting. You've totally contaminated your microwave. You may be fine now, but you've increased your chances of getting cancer in years to come. The arcing does look pretty cool, though.

It's like there's a "stupidest downvoter" competition or something lately. The fantastic presentation alone gets a 5; the random Stephanie and great music syncing are bonuses. Kudos.
