Adverb, remember that a=b, so you can change a to b and vice versa in the equation whenever you'd like.

"a=b=0 and that's all there is to it"--actually you are supposed to assume A and B both equal 1 i read how to do this in a book about zero
May 16th, 2006
(0)
the letter a knows where it is, because it knows where b isn't. If a was to know where it was, instead of where it wasn't it wouldn't be where it was, instead of where it is. Because 0 couldn't what it is or isn't, b instead takes it's place, because of what it couldn't, or shouldn't be.

well yeah, a=b=0 as people said. but if the rules for this are that you should assume values of 1, then it ends at (a-b) because that's 0 making the whole statement 0. also, i'm a complete nerd for saying that.
May 16th, 2006
(0)
This sucks go join a suicidal cult
May 16th, 2006
(0)
it's a simple Divide By Zero. it doesn't matter what a or b is... a=b, therefore a-b = a-a = 0, therefore you cannot divide both sides by (a-b).
May 16th, 2006
(0)
" i'm a complete nerd for saying that." Don't flatter yourself, you're stupid as hell.

if a=b=0 then of course 2a=a because its all zero but if a=b=(any positive number) then the statement is true and false at the same time. it is common sense that 2 doesnt equal 1 but every step in the equation is justified

actually it's because of the -b^2 that was added to both sides. without that this equasion would balance out just fine.

To get a value for 2a=a you would need to know the value of a, thus making the whole equation redundant. 2a=a is the final step, there is no way you can get to 2=1 from there.

May 16th, 2006

The error is in the 4th->5th line transition. Since A=B, (A-B)=0. When you divide each side by (A-B) to get (A+B)=B, you're actually dividing by zero. Hence, the error.
May 16th, 2006

Skorpius: "If a=2 and b=1, then a does not equal b from the start. This fails horribly, sorry." Are you serious? I'm going to hope that you're not in high school. I'm also going to raise that, and hope that you're not in middle school. The assumption from the onset is a=b. if a=2 and b=1, does a=b? No. So none of the rest follows. As many have pointed out, the error comes from division by zero. If you assume that a=b, then when you subtract b^2 from both sides, you're zeroing out the equation.GG Educatio

"To get a value for 2a=a you would need to know the value of a, thus making the whole equation redundant. 2a=a is the final step, there is no way you can get to 2=1 from there." Divide by a. As for "divide by zero error", there's no need to even go that far. (a+b)(a-a) = b(a-b) (a+b)(0) = b(0) 0 = 0
May 16th, 2006
(0)
SVTBert. Yes. Well done. Kudos. Though, you do have to go that far to see the error in the argumentation. As I noted before, you're zeroing the equation. Thus losing all information. But the error that yields 2=1 as a conclusion is division by zero. Without it, you don't get the erroneous result.
May 16th, 2006

May 16th, 2006

(a+b)(a-b)=b(a-b) does NOT imply that (a+b)=b, because a-b=0. if you multiply two different numbers by 0, they're both equal two zero

May 16th, 2006
(0)
Oh wait, that don't work. (a-b)=0, so you can't devide it. You fail.
May 16th, 2006
(0)
btw vizerei, dividing a number by 0 is not equal to infinite. it is indefinite. the correct statement is that dividing a number that APPROACHES (to the limit) zero you get a number that approaches infinity. The divisor only gets closer to zero, but is NEVER equal to zero. Zero is NOT to be mistaken for infinitesimally small numbers
May 16th, 2006
(0)
dude, (a+b)(a-b) does NOT equal b(a-b)
May 16th, 2006
(0)
The step where you divide both sides by (a-b) is actually a division by zero (because a = b) and thus this derivation is incorrect. But nice try. (even though this has been around the net for a while now)
May 16th, 2006
(0)
The only possible way for a + a = a is if a is zero. Fail.
May 16th, 2006
(0)
'A' would equal zero because you cant go from 'A+B=B' to 'A+A=A'. You would have to divide '(A+B)' by 'B' which would make A=0 therefore B=0 also

divide by zero error = nonexistant for you
May 16th, 2006
(0)
To clarify for everyone, (a+b)(a-b) does equal b(a-b). But, since (a-b) equals zero, b does not necessarily equal (a+b)...this comes from the rule that any number multiplied by zero equals zero. That's the only error, but it's crucial. Oh yeah, 1'd for promoting false mathematical proofs.

if you ignore the fact that the variables are known and assume they aren't and do the equation it all works out but if you replace a and b with 1 then it desnt work because you divide by zero. so if oyu think about it division by zero is impossible but you can divide by variables equal to zero.

This is an equation in which the variables equal everything and nothing. a=b=(all reals) and a=b=(nonreal) Yes a variable can equal multiple things in algebra. Because if at any point in the equation a variable can equal something, then it does. Unless that equation is augmented by another equation which causes it to have only a limited number of values.
May 16th, 2006
(0)
EXCELLENT!
May 16th, 2006
(0)
Damn you guys are retarded. The error is when both sides are divided by (a-b). Since a=b, you are subtracting the number by itself, which will always result in zero. And, incase you failed 1st grade math, you can't divide by 0. Considering that, the rest of the math is right.

I did this a long time ago and then deleted it. You have better music though
May 16th, 2006
(0)
since A=A, substitute A for all the B's. it becomes painfully obvious that the error is that when factoring (A+A)(A-A) it becomes -4A, which is not equal to A^2 - A^2. ill give you the 4 though, but you shouldnt encourage people to go around telling people this
May 16th, 2006

Your all idiots. You can clearly see that in the transition from the 3rd to the 4rth line that there is a switch in which ab-b squared suddenly becomes b(a-b). This is impossible as that would mean that a variable b is missing. This is nothing but a lack of effort. 1.

"2a will never equal a" 2*0 != 0??? gtfo newb. the error is when he factors a^2-b^2, which is equal to a^2-a^2, which is 0. Due to the fact that x*0 = 0, the factoring is invalid. he also divides by (a-b) in the next step, which is dividing by 0. For these reasons the "proof" is invalid

lol, this is absolutely pathetic, ytmndoggers in this comments list arguing over an algebraic riddle that is a classic extra-credit question. The ytmnd was funny. The retarded freshmen* attempting to sound intelligent by regurgitating intermediate algebra? Hysterical. *Obviously that does not mean everyone.

How do you not know how to distribute multiplication over addition? lets do a quick check here. 5*2+5 = 15. 5(2+1)=5*3=15. lets replace with variables: b*a+b=b(a+1). ab-b^2 is just an extension. UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!!!

you lost all of your solutions except a=0 when you divided by (b-a) in step 4, and you lost the solution a=0 when you divided by a in step 7. it's calculus, mothaf*cka. 1'd because f*ck you.

CHUCK NORRIS CAN DIVIDE BY ZERO

obviously a and b equal zero. where the f*ck did you get 2=1?
May 16th, 2006

THE VALUE OF A OR B IS IRRELEVANT BECAUSE THEY ARE EQUAL TO EACHOTHER. THE IMPORTANT THING IS THAT YOU DIVIDED BY (A-B) WHICH IS EQUAL TO 0, AND YOU CAN'T DIVIDE BY 0.

Sure it's illogic, and it doesnt work in the realm of mathematics, but it still made me think for a moment! look@this now : a=0,99... / 10a=9,99... / 10a=9,00+0,99... / 10a=9,00+a (0,99...=a, remember?) / 9a=9,00 / a=1

Well, everyone has already pointed out "Hey, you can't divide by zero." I think I should point out that Chuck Norris can do that. You however, are not Chuck Norris.

Yeh, nice classic one. Just 2 things on the comments. 1) Some people said dividing by zero gives +-infinity. This is wrong, you can't divide at all (hence the notation of limits).
